Description
A list of the search engines that are active as of the 3rd quarter of 2023. The dataset includes search engines that were running from March until May 2023.
At the time of the research, a total of 151 search engines were collected registered in 42 countries.
Research Goals and Objectives
- Generate a list of search engines for global queries and seeking out the necessary information;
- Identification of popular search engines around the world;
- Accentuation of the oldest search engines.
Disclaimers
The study contains search engines designed to perform web searches for regular queries. The collected information does not claim absolute completeness and is intermediate in the planned research cycle.
Research Methodology
Search Engines were collected via open sources using the following search methods:
- Open Google and Bing search;
- Similar Sites search;
- Similarweb search.
For ease of comparison, the resulting information is grouped by the following criteria:
- Name — the search engine’s official title;
- Link — a link to the search engine itself;
- Traffic for 03.2023 — the amount of traffic registered in March 2023;
- Traffic for 04.2023 — the amount of traffic registered in April 2023;
- Traffic for 05.2023 — the amount of traffic registered in May 2023;
- Country of Origin — the country the search engine originates from;
- Regional Divisions — whether the company runs regional versions for their engine or not;
- Darknet — whether the search engine works in darknet or not;
- Based on Google — whether the search engine was based on Google or not;
- Registered — the date when the search engine was registered;
- Site cost in $ by Be1 — the estimated price of the website determined by Be1 methods;
- Unique Links — the amount of unique links in a particular search engine;
- Unique Domains — the amount of unique domains in a particular search engine;
- Trust Rang by Megaindex — a search engine’s trustability ranking determined by Megaindex criteria;
- Domain Rank by Megaindex — a search engine’s domain ranking determined by Megaindex criteria.
Short Insights
A total of 151 active search engines were found, including:
- Search engines registered in 42 countries, except 16 who provide no information on their country of origin;
- 46 out of 151 search engines that have regional divisions;
- 17 search engines operating in the darknet.

Assumptions and Opinions
Google is in the lead by the amount of monthly traffic, but Chinese search engines are growing in popularity with each passing month. The USA has the largest number of registered search engines among all other countries.
Future Goals and Extensions
- Expansion of the data that the search engine list is based on;
- Introduction of the search engines category for children/with age restrictions;
- Search engine categorization by supported languages;
- Dataset enrichment with AI-based search engines;
- Search engines division into search sections;
- Search engines grouping by accessibility support: voice input, image searching, etc.
