Many sports betting enthusiasts would love to have bets every hour every day, but unfortunately there are not so many important sport events in real life that happen every hour to provide bookmakers that opportunity to accept those potential bets every hour. Since the number of people wishing to place a bet is growing, and the proportionality of real events in the world is not so great, a new ideal option was invented – fantasy sport (also known as rotisserie or roto).

Fantasy sport meaning

Roto is a type of game where the manager (player) of the game creates his own virtual team based on the statistics of real players and makes his predictions for winning. Then all the data is converted into points, which can be calculated by a “league commissioner” or a computer, tracking the actual results of professional sports. Here the “manager” can either exchange or discard players, as it happens in real sports.

For example, you virtually buy Messi, and, in the next round he (the real one, on the field in the Spanish Championship) scores two goals – and your virtual team scores points.

Today there are many real sites where you can place a bet on virtual sports, but it can be difficult to appreciate their real value and differences. The Data40 team made a step into the Fantasy sport industry and created a dataset. This list of all the most popular roto projects can be purchased on the Data40 website, and can actually help to understand and explore the Fantasy sport industry.

History of appearance

The idea of fantasy sports originated after the Second World War, but it has turned into a mass business now. In the late 1950s, Oakland businessman Wilfred “Bill” Winkenbach invented fantastic golf. Each player himself recruited a team of virtual golf players, and at the end the one with the smallest total number of strokes won.

In 1962, he formed the first 8-player fantasy football league called the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Predictor League (GOPPPL). The first fantasy baseball league was formed in Boston in 1960. William Gamson brought scoring players in terms of average, RBI, ERA and wins to Harvard University and later to Michigan.

Later in 1976, a similar baseball league was formed at Glassboro State College. From where the second name of fantasy sports (Rotisserie) comes from, a significant event was the formation of the baseball league in 1980, the Rotisserie League. The origin of the name is attributed to the restaurant La Rotisserie Francaise, where the creators gathered and made their predictions. They enrolled active players in the team and collected their results during the season.

One of the creators was Daniel Okrent, a media representative, and he was able to introduce others to the conditions of such a game quickly. Popularity growth was incredibly successful in 1981 during the Major League Baseball strike because there was little to write about. Appearance on July 8, 1980 in the New York Times article “What George Steinbrenner is to the American League, Lee Eisenberg is to the Rotisseries League” set off a media storm that led to stories about the league on CBS TV and other publications.

Fantasy Sport - History of appearance

Already in March 1981, Okrent wrote an essay about the Rotisserie League entitled “The Year George Foster Wasn’t Worth $36.” It described the rules, and in 1984 a guide to the game appeared.

The interest in baseball was fueled in 1982 with the publication of The Bill James Summary. Later, many began to use James’ statistical tools and analysis to improve their teams. James himself was not particularly interested in fantasy baseball, but high sales helped to emphasize it.

The statistics of USA Today counted over 1000 leagues for 1988, where the number of teams ranged from 8 to 12.

Growing interest in fantasy sport betting

Okrent attributes the growth and success of the business to USA Today, where a report on the games was provided in great detail. Then the article in the publishing house was taken up by John Benson, Alex Patton, and Ron Shandler. The first one published his first book on fantasy baseball in 1989, and then, in the same year, developed the first rough simulation program, the software he still sells today.

In the 1990s, the publishing activities of other authors of that famous article began. Patton has it – The 1989 Patton Fantasy Baseball League Price Guide, Ron Shandler published his Baseball SuperSTATS book in November. Other genres also appeared – fantasy football. 1987 is known for the appearance of the first annual Fantasy Football Index. The first week of this sport dates back to 1992, and 7 years later brought a combined income of $ 2 million.

1993 marked the beginning of the publication of a weekly columnist under the leadership of Hunt in USA Today. Hunt may have been the best-known fantasy sports commentator before the internet. The number of players grew from 1991 to 1994 from one to 4 million. He also founded the first league of high-ranking experts.

Internet-boom

The prototype of a modern fantasy betting website was Molson Breweries in 1995, and a year later this website received the International Digital Media Award for Best Website of 1995. Commissioner.com, launched on the first day of 1997, initially offered services such as statistics, league message boards, score updates, and other features for fantasy baseball. In the late 1990s, SportsLine was sold for $ 31 million and three years later brought them a combined income of 11 million. It is now the main engine behind the CBSSports.com fantasy zone since CBS bought it in 2004.

Be the commish or join a league

Other sites that have linked to fantasy sports have grown significantly. One of these is RotoWire.com, formerly known as RotoNews.com. According to Media Metrix, after creating the first article on this genre within two years, the site became the top ten most visited. In the late 2000s, it was sold to Broadband Sports.

This popularity has attracted other major media players as well. Fantasy Sports Yahoo introduced a new business model in 1999. A survey of the fantasy sports market in the U.S. in 1999 showed that about 30 million people over 18 are interested in fantasy sports games.

Fantasy Football

At the beginning of the 2000s, the general trend of many sites began to change. Some were going bankrupt, while others were already moving away from the free model and charging for information.

The game in the genre of fantasy began literally to contribute to watching TV, based on surveys; men spent more than 6 hours a week on this. The NFL began airing the first fantasy football television commercials. A 2003 study by the Fantasy Sports Trade Association found that about 15 people are playing the genre, and ten years later Forbes shows that the number of Americans playing the industry has doubled.

In 2008, Montana began offering fantasy sports betting for the first time. In 2012, a lot of fantasy sports apps appeared.

Can any make money on bets?

Today bets in fantasy sports do not take place per game for the entire season, but only for a week or daily. This makes it possible to get a profit faster and do real business on it. Now the legality of games is out of the question and allows players to play from anywhere in the world.

Thanks to the Internet, fantasy sports sites can be easily found, but the list will not give an understanding of the complete picture. In the list on our website you can see modern Fantasy sport projects In addition you’ll find in dataset a serious analysis of the value of websites, the amount of the minimum deposit and much more is fully carried out.

According to our data, in July this year alone, the traffic of the cbssports website brought over 75,000,000 unique visitors. And the statistics of the number of users is growing daily, although it all began in the United States. Today the whole world is closely following sports events, getting money for pleasure. Also, there are top 5 websites with real gambling analysis which gives an advantage over other players.

The main properties of such products

As the data show, the growth of this type of bets is growing due to convenient use: on some websites, players choose mainly mobile devices for playing, rather than personal computers. Basically, the language and type of authorization can also be found in the list.

Sports knowledge increases the participant’s chances of winning. Matches mostly take place either daily or seasonally (sometimes it can only be a week of the season). The higher the stakes, the higher the winnings. Fantasy points are used to determine the winners of DFS fantasy tournaments. Each site that provides daily fantasy games has its own rules for scoring.

Today the bookmaker market is changing, and it is essential to have time to “jump on this train early”, because this phenomenon has not yet swept over the CIS countries and some other territories. Therefore, there is a minimum of competition.

According to the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association, the only national organization globally that represents the interests of fantasy sports, the popularity of games of any genre and bets is almost identical. Most of all, DFS is now popular in Canada and America, but the pace of its popularity is growing rapidly and has already conquered Europe, Asia and Russia.

There are more and more opportunities for competition: both for money and against friends or just for your pleasure. Some applications even allow you to create your own league and set your own rules there. Today, fantasy sports include basketball, hockey, tennis, e-sports, Formula 1, handball, cricket. There are also games according to the format of prizes: no prizes or with prizes in the form of sports paraphernalia, cash prizes. According to the duration of the game, games can be one-day, weekly, seasonal, and so on.

Now the threshold is close to zero on some websites, which shows the points of development of this genre for the future in the CIS countries, Asia and Russia. Also, the site always provides rules for games. Common rules most often determine the number of eligible players in a team, as well as the award of fantasy points and the distribution of the prize pool. More and more fantasy game formats appear every day.

Most significant projects and leaders in fantasy sport

The amount of the minimum deposit on the sites may differ, you can learn more about the minimum and maximum contributions here. Fantasy sports leaders vary depending on the genre. For example, it is better to play for money at Fanteam. They recently added eSports – CS:GO, Dota2, LoL – and even cricket baseball. The administration quickly responds to comments on the website, which does excellent service. For the baseball genre, the NBA is well suited. The number of matches per day at the latter is enormous, but this is understandable, especially for fans of American baseball.

Fantasy Football betting

Not all sites can play for real money, and many do not have adaptation for Mobile app. For example, they are not on the sites ESPN, MLB, sports yahoo, Sports.ru and many others. The undisputed leaders in terms of traffic are cbssports.com, mpl.live, fanduel.com.

In the list of leaders for 2021, the fifth place is occupied by What If Sports, according to research by Data40. The rest, their statistics and other data can be found there.

FanDuel and DraftKings, two of the largest paid fantasy platforms, are bucking this considerable demand, multiplying the excitement for the opportunity to win. FanDuel’s largest open league, the Sunday Millions, has a weekly prize pool of $ 2.25 million. The winner receives $ 250,000. Some 21,000 players end up in the black with up to $ 50 in bonuses.

What awaits players soon

In some regions, well-known platforms are provided only partially, this reduces competition and can increase the growth of income several times. In the USA, where the competition is very high and many interested players, it is more difficult to win.

According to the FTS, players spend on average about $ 556 on fantasy games. About 70% of this amount is spent on purchasing the league favorites. According to data for 16, Europeans spend about $600 a year, although in the previous year the figure was twice lower.

For the CIS countries, this is a huge advantage and attracts more and more players every year. Such a business is increasing the number of fantasy sports sites and shows that the trend is growing.

Russia, Asia and other countries are gradually catching up with the USA and Canada. Over the course of a year, the number of players almost doubles. The FS market for 2015 was estimated at about 3-4 billion dollars.
